There are several issues with the food that comes from China. Babies have died from drinking formula from China, people have died from eating fish from China and melanine has been found in numerous other Chinese food products. Because of these issues I've stopped buying seafood that is a product of china. I also try and avoid any other type of food that comes from China but it is sometimes hard to tell if it gets processed there.
There are several reasons why food products from China have issues.
- The FDA checks less than 1% of all products that enter the United States. They do not have the manpower to do more. Often times what Chinese suppliers can do after a product has been rejected is simply to pull the ship out of the harbor and return a short time later.
- The Chinese government does not have the ability to check all products going out.
- The Chinese producers are not regulated enough by the government. They can set up shop and rarely are any safety rules enforced.
So what can you do about it? Well the first thing you can do is to contact your state representitives and let them know that food and product safety from Chinese products is an issue for you. There is also a standard form that you can fill out to let your representative know that you want products labeled with their country of origin. Next, try not to buy food that is labeled as a product of China or made in China. Avoiding products that are made in China will be extremely difficult since so much is imported from China but food you should be able to avoid.
I have written on another blog in the past about product from China. What got me to write about it again today was the recent issue with Chinese produced drywall. I'll continue to update this post as I hear about different issues with chinese products. Feel free to add any information you find about Chinese products in the comments below.

Hopefully they really do start regulating the food supply better.
Another China made product is in the news: Childrens Jewelry. Apparantely it contains toxic metals.
